Session 1 – Get data from a public (or private) API and use it in your TouchDesigner project
We live in an age of data collection and there is an every increasing demand to integrate all kinds of data into media installations and performances. Much of this data is accessible through public APIs and TouchDesigner allows you to download data or even employ live data streams into your projects. Wieland Hilker will demonstrate how to acquire data from the internet and format it perfectly for the use with TouchDesigner. Learn about JSON and leverage Python to connect your projects to the internet.
Session 2 – Set up a local webserver inside your TouchDesigner project to interact with a web interface
With the webserver DAT it has become possible to run a light weight webserver right inside TouchDesigner. This has many use cases, but one of the most popular and useful features is to grant clients, administrators and audiences access to features and parameters of TouchDesigner installations over local WIFI from literally any device that can run a web browser.
After the live lessons you will get access to the recording and the workshop files for one year.
Requirements
This module is made for participants, who have a basic understanding of TouchDesigner, but do not need any experience with shader languages. If you just getting started, please visit our Beginners Course first.
- A recent PC or MAC Computer (discreet GPU recommended) with stable internet connection
- The latest build of TouchDesigner installed
- A working nodejs installation
- Zoom Client installed (please test your audio setup beforehand)
- 3-Button Mouse recommended

The Berlin based creative developer Wieland Hilker is a fellow at the The Node Institute and well known to the community as Alphamoonbase.Berlin – a steady source of useful tools and components with that special Python sauce. His OLIB is the biggest free resource of TouchDesigner components. As a certified stage technician Wieland has acquired a wide range of experiences. From working behind the scenes at the opera to designing massive multiscreen system architectures for trade fairs, he knows how to make shows of all sizes work.
