Projection Mapping refers to the idea of mapping existing or specifically created objects, like buildings or stage designs with video or laser projections. The technique has become very popular in recent years and TouchDesigner offers a palette of tools that help artists to achieve pixel perfect projection mapping from small, experimental projects to huge installments with dozens of projectors. While most projection mappings are pre-rendered CGI animations, TouchDesigner offers the possibility to create real time content on the fly and use VJing techniques to perform live with musicians and dancers, or create interactive mappings.
In this module, Stefan Kraus will show how to use those tools and introduce an advanced mapping workflow, that leverages simulation and semi automatic mapping for even the most complex structures, that you will be able to adapt to your own projects.
However, projection mapping is as much about understanding the real world constrains and the necessary production technology as it is about the software employed. Stefan will draw from two decades of practical experience to explain by means of real world examples how to plan, prepare and conduct stunning illusions and how to avoid the many traps that line the way.
After the live lesson you will get access to the recording and the workshop files for one year.
This module is made for participants, who have a basic understanding of TouchDesigner. If you just getting started, please visit our Beginners Course first.

About the Instructor
The Berlin based media artist and educator, Stefan Kraus, is co-founder of the creative coding education hub, The NODE Institute, the projection mapping festival, Genius Loci Weimar, and the media art studio, MXZEHN. Trained as an architect at Bauhaus-University Weimar, Stefan explores the augmentation of physical structures using interactive and generative media and the narrative potential of abstract imagery. He holds a special interest in the art of live visual improvisation and creates augmented scenographies for theater, dance and music performances. Stefan enjoys sharing his knowledge and experience with the students of different universities and the creative coding community. His studio produces interactive installations, live media performances and augmented reality applications for commercial clients, festivals, institutions and exhibitions
