Sound to Light: using interactive LEDs live For Beginners & Intermediate

Workshop & showcase at Dutch Design Week : 14, 15 & 21 October 2024

In the week of Amsterdam Dance Event and Dutch Design Week we are organising a very special workshop! In this hands-on, 3-day course, you will have the unique opportunity to work with Chagall's interactive light installation B.A.B.Y. and create a live performance to be showcased at De Effenaar during Dutch Design WeekB.A.B.Y. is an immersive light installation featuring 12 LED arches, each approximately 3.5 meters tall, that can be fully controlled using visual engine TouchDesigner. Over the past three years, LoveLace founder Chagall has been developing and touring this innovative system, and now it’s your chance to explore its creative potential! This course is divided into two parts: the workshop and the showcase. In the workshop, you’ll focus on learning the system and developing a piece to present at the showcase night.Whether you’re a novice or already more experienced in the field of tech, this workshop will introduce you to the basics of using the visual engine TouchDesigner and enable you to take your productions and shows to the next level and engage with your audiences in new more immersive ways.

What will you learn?

In this session, you will learn the skills you need to put together a short performance with B.A.B.Y., like (but not limited to):

How to create 2D visuals using TouchDesigner
The LED arches are basically a low resolution curved LED screen, so in theory all we need to do is stream any type of moving images to B.A.B.Y. During the workshop you'll learn how to create these visuals. The cool thing about B.A.B.Y. is that because of the low resolution (she's 12 pixels wide and 250 pixels tall), things look pretty awesome and immersive pretty quickly, this is why she's a great and very motivating tool to learn about creating visuals.

Applying audio-reactivity to visuals for dynamic interactions
Applying audio-reactivity means that your visuals will respond dynamically to sound. This adds an interactive layer, allowing your visuals to change in real-time based on the audio input during the live performance. This is a key aspect of working with B.A.B.Y., as it enables you to create an immersive and responsive experience.

Controlling and manipulating visuals in real-time for live performances
You will gain hands-on control in manipulating visuals on the fly with a MIDI controller

Exploring different ways to interact with B.A.B.Y.
Including triggering visuals with movement and incorporating pre-programmed animations. You'll also dive into generative animation techniques, where visuals are created algorithmically. These techniques provide a range of creative possibilities for engaging and interactive visual effects.

Understanding how to stream visuals to a LED installation
The main focus of this tailored 3-day workshop is to create reactive LED visuals that sync to your music (sounds, vocal, live instruments) and/or your movements, learning directly from Chagall who will provide a personalised approach to building your project, guidance and advice on what you’re working on currently. You will get familiar with different technologies and apply them to your ideas which will get you started and leave you able to continue working on your own afterwards. Since you will design these visuals yourself, they will be a reflection of your creativity and vision, just like your music!

Teachers
This course will be taught by music technology innovator & musician Chagall and TouchDesigner expert Max Lahr from creative technology studio y=f(x).

Private session
Ahead of the workshop you'll receive some learning materials to prepare and are offered a one hour, private tutorial so everybody in the group will have the same basic knowledge.
